These inquiries will help you gather essential information and ensure that the contract aligns with your expectations and needs. 1. Hours and Guarantee
Start by discussing schedule specifics. Ask about whether it’s a “rotating” or “variable” schedule and, if so, what the rotation looks like. For instance, inquire about how many days are between switching from day shift to night shift. We also recommend asking about the typical availability of overtime hours to pick up and if there’s on-call, what does the call rotation look like.
2. Team Dynamics
Get a feel for the team dynamics at the facility. Find out if there are other healthcare travelers at the facility. If you can, reach out to them.
3. Orientation and Support
Inquire about the orientation provided, including how many days of floor orientation are offered. Orientation can encompass a hospital overview or unit/floor training. Also, consider asking whether the Charge Nurse ever takes assignments and, if so, how many patients they typically handle.

Jennifer’s journey in travel nursing has been filled with diverse and exciting assignments, but one particular adventure stands out—the year she spent as a travel nurse in Hawaii.
Hawaii is often considered one of the most coveted destinations for travel nurses. When Jennifer chose Hawaii as her next nursing assignment, she was captivated by the destination’s allure. The Hawaiian Islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty, lush landscapes, and the promise of a tropical paradise.
The Hidden Challenges
Life as a travel nurse on the islands came with its unique set of challenges. One obstacle was the high cost of living. Hawaii’s natural beauty comes at a price, with everything from groceries to housing often being more expensive than on the mainland. Balancing finances while savoring the beauty of Hawaii was a challenge Jennifer had to master.
